“Stepping onto a yoga mat is like stepping into a world of constant change. Each moment is different, each breath brings a new challenge, each body is unique in that moment, just as each moment is unique to our body and soul.”
Many people ask themselves the question throughout their lives: “Who am I? What is it that truly resonates with me and what is my pure essence?” I believe it is change that can show us the answer to this question. If we dare to accept the challenge, we open the door to an unknown world and embark on a journey of discovering our hidden selves. We are led to explore new areas, expand our boundaries, discover new talents and abilities, overcome fears, anxieties and limiting beliefs that hold us back and open ourselves to growth, knowledge, joy. Life is made of many unique moments full of small and big changes. I took on my biggest challenge yet a year ago. During that time, I realized that our identities are not fixed, they change and evolve as we grow.
Adaptability is the ability to embrace and adjust to these changes. Yoga offers us a way to develop this ability through our practice, breathing exercises and meditation. Our body adapts to new postures and movements in each moment with each practice, learning to tune into new patterns and learning to find balance. It is the same with change. Yoga teaches us how to deal with them with the same openness and adaptability. It teaches us to recognize our limits and to embrace the moment when we may need to step back or, conversely, transcend our own limitations. Inner observation and listening to our body and soul is the key to adaptability. Just as we can adapt to any position and execute it in the most appropriate way for us, we can do the same in our lives. Yoga gives us the tools and techniques to maintain balance and calm in the midst of change and uncertainty.
There are many styles and forms of yoga that allow us to discover what best suits our needs and abilities. There is endless space for exploration, discovery, creativity and adaptation. Through breathing exercises and meditations we learn to calm the mind and find an inner joy and balance that helps us to respond more easily to all of life’s situations.
Adaptability is not only about physical adjustment, but also about openness and willingness to accept new ideas, opinions and perspectives. Yoga guides us to overcome limitations and helps us to develop this mental framework to open up to new paths and possibilities. It teaches us to be flexible in our thinking and in the emotional realm. It guides us to examine our patterns of behaviour, ideas and beliefs that may be hindering our adaptability. We learn to recognize when we are holding on to old ways and when we should be open to new approaches and perspectives.
Adaptability in the world of yoga is not only to adapt to external circumstances, but also to perceive and respect our inner needs and boundaries. Through yoga, we are guided to perceive the subtle signals of our body, emotions and the language of our mind and respond to them with love, care and patience. The reward for this is harmony with ourselves.
To adapt is not to submit and be passive. It is the ability to show creativity and find new ways to cope with situations in our inner and outer world. Embrace challenges with courage and openness, explore all alternative paths through experimentation, discovery and innovation.
Yoga as well as adaptability are connected to the body, mind and soul. The practice of yoga teaches us to strengthen our physical strength and flexibility, develop mental flexibility and openness, and connect with our inner wisdom and intuition. This allows us to not only survive in a changing world, but to evolve and grow.
Step onto the mat with an open heart, ready to embrace whatever the moment brings. Let us learn adaptability through yoga and let it guide us into a state of joy and harmony in the midst of a world full of change.
